Tuesday Tasting: Franchere & Hanson Vineyards

Join us for complimentary tastings every Tuesday evening from 5-7pm!

This week we’re happy to welcome a double feature: Franchere Wine Company and Hanson Vineyards

Franchere Wine Company

I've been making adventurous, balanced, thoughtfully crafted wines under the Franchere label since 2013. I ferment my wines solely with native yeasts and without temperature controlled tanks, filtration, weird enological products, or fancy machines.

And while I love grapes in the Pinot family, I also work with Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Ehrenfelser, Kerner, and other varieties that are less commonly grown in the Willamette Valley.

Hanson Vineyards

Behind every bottle stands a decade of focus, farming and faith in this crazy endeavor.  The idea is pretty simple:  grow the best, highest quality grapes we possibly can.  Then, at the peak of ripeness, harvest the grapes and allow them to turn themselves into wine.  That's it!

We don't believe in adding a bunch of "stuff" to our wine.  Just a direct, unadulterated expression of our soil and the weather mother nature provides.

Tuesday Tasting: Jackalope Wine Cellars

This week we’re happy to welcome Jackalope Wine Cellars!

From the winemaker …

I began my journey in the wine industry pouring for a small, family-owned winery near Salem, OR. My first career was all office work, so when I found myself working in a bucolic setting, the grin didn’t fade for days.

When Fall hit I joined a harvest crew. Harvest work is hard, wet, with long-hours, but ultimately satisfying work. Camaraderie is formed through the suffering, and there is always something new to learn. The first team lunch I had began my love affair with the industry, and wine: a tired, wet, exhausted crew sharing a large meal and a glass, taking a break from the work to regroup and prepare for the afternoon’s tasks. This showed me: the wine industry is about community, and a love of the work, something I’d not experienced before.

For me, the chance to create something, to have an end product I could hold in my hand and share led me to wanting to make my own wine. Further, wine is a social beverage. A wine bottle contains memories, experiences, and love. I want to create this.

Why Jackalope Wine Cellars? The jackalope has been a sort of totem for me for a long time. As a kid, my older cousin would write and send postcards from Nebraska, telling me all about the animal, swearing they were real. These memories formed a bond early, which gave me fond memories to treasure, as he passed away when I was in 8th grade.

Fast forward to 2004: unsatisfied with my life as a civil engineer, I decided to make a drastic change and quit my job, sell my valuables, and travel. My gift to myself to start this journey was a jackalope tattoo on my right shoulder to join me on my adventures.

And now, another turning point in my life: winemaker. The jackalope has become a special form of support for me and I want him featured prominently in this adventure. Thus, Jackalope Wine Cellars.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Tuesday Tasting: Syncline

Join us for complimentary tastings every Tuesday evening from 5-7pm!

This week we’re happy to welcome Syncline Winery!

Poppie and James met during the harvest of 1997 while working together in the cellar in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, where James had been winemaking since 1994. Shortly after, they fell madly in love and began plans for a new endeavor: a vineyard of their own.

Lured by the majestic wildness of the mountains and whitewater rivers, they relocated their home to the Columbia River Gorge. Their passion for Rhône and sparkling wines led them to explore the emerging potential of vineyards in Washington State.

Inspired by the early efforts of Rhône and Burgundy-style wines sampled from Washington vineyards, Syncline’s first vintage in 1999 consisted of 76 cases of Celilo Vineyard Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1973. They were part of the small group that founded the Columbia Gorge AVA in 2004.

They have built a strong reputation as a creative, limited-production, autonomous estate winery with a vision of creating world-class wines while maintaining biodynamic estate vineyards, green building practices, and innovative wine growing.

With 19 acres of estate vineyards in the Columbia Gorge and winegrower partners in Red Mt, Yakima, and Horse Heaven Hills, production is kept under 5,000 cases annually to ensure intimacy with each barrel and vine.
